The wolf that appears top right is carved red cedar and acrylic by Stan Matilpi, approximately 50 cm wide. A member of the Kwakuitl Nation, Stan was born in 1936 at Alert Bay on Vancouver Island. He began carving totems in 1969 while working in logging camps. Encouraged by the response to his work, he refined his craft with the guidance of his brother, well known artist Oscar Matilpi. Using traditional colours and red cedar, he specialized in hand-finished miniture masks. Stan Matilpi died in 2005. The name Lopes comes from the Latin lupus, wolf. |
